Overview
This Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media covers journalism, graphic design, public relations, creative media production, and strategic communication, combining critical study of media and audiences with hands-on practice. From the first courses, students work directly with audio production, story pitching, design, and communication strategy, and every student completes at least one work-integrated learning placement — options at CMU have included radio and podcast production, marketing and public relations work with non-profits, graphic design, journalism internships, and communications roles with community organizations. Coursework also examines how history, ethics, politics, and culture shape communication practice. Students interested in combining writing and cultural analysis with media training can pursue an interdisciplinary option linking Communications and Media with English. The four-year degree is delivered at Canadian Mennonite University's Winnipeg campus. Graduates commonly move into journalism, public relations, marketing, design, and other media and communications roles.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is assessed against the standards of the applicant's home province. Manitoba applicants need an average of no less than 70% across English 40S (minimum 60%), a Grade 12-level mathematics course, and one further academic 40S/G/U course, plus two additional academic courses at that level; other provinces are held to comparable but distinct benchmarks, such as an average of 60% or higher across five Grade 12 academic courses with English 30-1 at a minimum 60% for Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, or a 70% overall average with no course below 60% and English at a minimum 65% for British Columbia, Yukon, and Ontario. Applicants can be granted conditional admission on a current transcript listing courses still in progress, with final official transcripts due, sent directly from the school or through MyCreds, once the year of study is complete. The application deadline for Fall entry is August 25.
