This Bachelor of Arts in English covers fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction from a range of periods and perspectives, developing close reading, critical analysis, and writing skills. Classes are small and discussion-based, and coursework regularly connects literary study to philosophy, theology, and film. Students gain hands-on publishing experience through CMU Press, including work with a traditional printing press, manuscript editing, and book design, and can contribute to campus publications such as the Soul in Paraphrase literary magazine and The Doxa newspaper. Work-integrated learning placements — for example as a Writing Fellow mentoring other students, or in a placement with a local publisher, school, or non-profit — connect classroom study to applied writing and editing experience. The four-year degree is delivered at Canadian Mennonite University's campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Graduates pursue careers in teaching, publishing, journalism, law, and non-profit or ministry work, and some continue into graduate study in English, education, or related fields.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is assessed against the standards of the applicant's home province. Manitoba applicants need an average of no less than 70% across English 40S (minimum 60%), a Grade 12-level mathematics course, and one further academic 40S/G/U course, plus two additional academic courses at that level; other provinces are held to comparable but distinct benchmarks, such as an average of 60% or higher across five Grade 12 academic courses with English 30-1 at a minimum 60% for Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, or a 70% overall average with no course below 60% and English at a minimum 65% for British Columbia, Yukon, and Ontario. Applicants can be granted conditional admission on a current transcript listing courses still in progress, with final official transcripts due, sent directly from the school or through MyCreds, once the year of study is complete. The application deadline for Fall entry is August 25.
