Overview
The Jazz Studies: Bachelor of Music Degree - Performance/Composition prepares music educators with a core practice in jazz performance and composition in balance with other musical traditions. You'll receive extensive training in various instruments, including keyboards, percussion, guitar, bass, woodwinds, brass, vocals, working with other musicians in ensembles and studio performance. In addition to learning about musical history and techniques, you'll build your skills by studying scores and compositions, trying your hand at arranging and boosting your sight reading and singing. If you plan to play, compose, teach, or move on to graduate studies, this program will put you in company with performers, composers and teachers.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent. The programme page defers to Capilano's general English Language Requirements for applicants educated in a language other than English: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6), TOEFL iBT 83, CAEL 70, PTE Academic 56, or Duolingo English Test 125+ (no sub-score below 115). Beyond the academic requirement, entry is by interview and audition; the audition includes a performance, an aural skills assessment, a sight-reading assessment, and a music theory assessment. Grade 12 students may apply for conditional admission on their final Grade 11 and/or interim Grade 12 marks, with final admission contingent on graduation.
