Bioinformatics is a Bachelor's Degree programme in Carleton University's Faculty of Science, combining computer science, biology, biochemistry and statistics to analyze biological data. The programme reflects how modern biology in the postgenomic age is being enriched by ideas from computer science, information science, mathematics, systems research and statistics, applying computational tools and artificial intelligence methods to problems such as gene identification, drug interactions, protein structure, biodiversity and climate change. Coursework spans bioinformatics, biology, biochemistry and computer science, giving students a grounding in both life sciences and computational techniques. A Co-op option lets students complete paid work terms, developing employability skills, exploring career options, and graduating with tangible workplace experience alongside the degree. Graduates are prepared for roles that apply computational analysis to biological and genomic data across research, healthcare, biotechnology and related data-driven fields.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including a minimum of six 4U or M courses, which for Bioinformatics must include Advanced Functions and two of Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, or Physics (Calculus and Vectors is strongly recommended). An overall average of at least 70% is normally required to be considered for admission.
