The Master of Arts in Teaching English as an Additional Language (MA TEAL) is a 1-year, full-time graduate program for international students preparing to teach English in contexts where English is not the dominant language. It is distinct from the MA in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies with TESL Specialization. The curriculum covers second language acquisition theory and research, teaching methodologies, English for specific and academic purposes, language testing and assessment, curriculum design, and teaching with technology, along with focus areas such as vocabulary, pragmatics, pronunciation, and literacy instruction. The degree is completed through Coursework or Project pathways with a pedagogy-focused capstone project. Admission Requirements: The normal minimum requirement for admission to the MA in Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL) is a B.A. Honours degree or equivalent, with a minimum of B+ in related courses and B overall in academic work (equivalent to a grade point average of 8.0). Applicants are recommended to have an elemental understanding of major concepts related to linguistics and/or language education and relevant professional experience. A statement of purpose discussing relevant coursework, language-acquisition experience and professional background is required, and applicants must also meet Carleton's English-language proficiency standard.
