PhD in Aerospace Engineering

This program leads to a Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering, offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, a joint graduate program of Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. It is thesis-based and normally takes four to five years to complete on a full-time basis, with admission for the Fall or Winter term; the program does not offer Summer-term courses. Students choose a research specialization from six fields: Aeronautical and Space Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Controls and Robotics, Materials and Manufacturing, Solid Mechanics and Design, and Thermal and Fluid Engineering, with research spanning aerodynamics, aero-structures, combustion and heat transfer, robotics and controls, solid and fracture mechanics, space and satellite technologies, and sustainable energy conversion. The program has research collaborations and funding arrangements with National Research Council of Canada institutes, Environment Canada, Natural Resources Canada, National Defence, the Ottawa Hospital and the Canadian Space Agency, and with industry partners including Pratt & Whitney Canada, Magellan Aerospace and Rolls-Royce Canada.
