Cegep de Saint Hyacinthe offers Diploma in Techniques d'hygiène dentaire, a diploma in Dentistry programme in Saint-Hyacinthe, Canada. The programme runs for 6 semesters. Teaching is in French. Tuition for international students is CAD 23,480 per year (CAD 3,740 per year for local students).
Techniques d'hygiène dentaire is a technical DEC preparing students to work with diverse client groups in clinical dental settings, public dental health, and community environments such as schools, long-term care homes, and home visits. The program combines technical, scientific, and interpersonal skills aimed at autonomous, collaborative, and rigorous practice, and also develops an entrepreneurial dimension so graduates can eventually practice independently in dental hygiene. Training is delivered through a recently revised curriculum and an expanded teaching clinic, with an emphasis on hands-on, practice-based learning supported by staff connected to the profession. Clinical placements (stages) form a significant part of the program: students are introduced to the profession through observation and initiation activities from the first year, move into clinical placements starting in the second year, and take on a larger placement load in the third year. The program also includes exposure to public dental health settings within the regional health network, and, depending on opportunities, placements with Indigenous communities or abroad. It suits students with manual dexterity, attention to detail, a sense of responsibility, empathy, and an interest in working with varied client populations in a health-related field.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a Diplôme d'études secondaires (DES) with Secondary 4 Science, Technology (ST) and Technology and Science (STE), or Applied Science and Technology (ATS) and Environmental Science (SE), or Physical Science 436, as the program's course prerequisite. Places are limited and selection is competitive; the Cégep publishes the average of the last admitted student as a guide to the applicant pool's strength. Full vaccination is mandatory before clinical placements, and students' immunization records are checked and must be up to date before stages begin. As with all Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe programs, applicants apply through SRAM and must meet the college's French-proficiency conditions: a French-mastery or placement test where applicable, and the upgrading course 601-013-HY for weaker Secondary 5 French results, per the Cégep's admission-requirements page; every admitted student also sits the college's English placement test.
