Program details

Overview

This full-time, hands-on certificate builds the skills, knowledge and certifications that help graduates stand out as strong candidates for entry-level roles in firefighting, industrial safety and medical first response, with further opportunities in oil and gas, forestry and mining. Delivered mainly at the college's own Gold Creek site, with further sessions at the City of Cranbrook's fire hall and live-fire training facility, it offers direct exposure to realistic training conditions.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: College of the Rockies' Fire Training Certificate lists no formal academic admission requirement; its own outline states "None" and instead sets a series of non-academic conditions. Applicants must be 18 or older, hold a valid BC Class 5 driver's licence or equivalent at time of application, and submit a completed Fire Training Certificate Program admissions package. They must meet a minimum physical-fitness standard for strength, endurance and mobility, verified through a Physical Fitness form completed with a doctor's recommendation, pass a written entry-level firefighter aptitude test, and complete a virtual interview with the program instructor and coordinator; accepted applicants pay a $500 non-refundable commitment fee toward tuition and sign the Fire Program Waiver. As with all College of the Rockies programs, applicants whose first language is not English, or educated primarily in a language other than English, must meet the college's general English-proficiency requirement — TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS Academic 6.0, CAEL-CE 60 or PTE Academic 56, or an equivalent English-12 course combined with sufficient years of English-medium schooling — per the college's own admission requirements.
