Overview

The Carpenter Foundation is a 24-week pre-apprenticeship programme at College of the Rockies that introduces students to residential, light commercial, light industrial and heavy construction carpentry, covering the competencies of Level 1 of the four-level Carpenter apprenticeship. Delivered through a combination of on-campus and online instruction, the curriculum covers safe work practices, reading construction drawings and applying building codes and bylaws, use of hand tools and portable and stationary power tools, ladders and scaffolds, survey instruments, site layout, concrete formwork, wood-frame construction, and building science principles. On completion, students receive Level 1 Technical Training credit from SkilledTradesBC toward the Carpenter apprenticeship, a Certificate of Completion from SkilledTradesBC, a College of the Rockies certificate, and credit for 450 hours of work-based training. The programme suits people who enjoy hands-on, creative work both indoors and outdoors and who are considering careers in construction, cabinet making or disaster restoration. As a foundation-level credential it functions as an entry point into the trade, positioning graduates to move on to employer-sponsored apprenticeship training and ultimately Red Seal certification.
