Overview
The Electrician Foundation is a 24-week pre-apprenticeship programme at College of the Rockies that prepares students for Level 1, or Common Core, of the four-level Construction/Industrial Electrician apprenticeship. Delivered in a blended format combining classroom theory with hands-on practice in an electrical concepts lab and shop, the curriculum covers circuit concepts and application of the Canadian Electrical Code, installation and maintenance of single-phase metering equipment, grounding and bonding systems, cables and enclosures, branch circuitry and low-voltage distribution systems, communication systems and protective devices, along with Basic First Aid and WHMIS training. On completion, students receive Level 1 Technical Training credit from SkilledTradesBC toward the Construction/Industrial Electrician apprenticeship, a Certificate of Completion, a College of the Rockies certificate, and credit for 350 hours of work-based training. The programme suits people with good communication and reading skills, physical fitness, an aptitude for mathematics, and comfort with mechanical problem-solving and tool use. As a foundation credential, it serves as an entry point into the trade ahead of employer-sponsored apprenticeship and eventual Red Seal certification.
