Overview
The Heavy Mechanical Foundation is a 36-week pre-apprenticeship programme at College of the Rockies, delivered in a blended on-campus and hybrid format at the Cranbrook campus, that introduces students to servicing heavy mobile equipment. The curriculum covers occupational skills across brake, hydraulic, electrical and electronic systems, frames, steering and suspension, trailers, HVAC, engines and powertrains, together with Basic First Aid and WHMIS training. On completion, graduates receive Level 1 Technical Training credit from SkilledTradesBC that can be applied toward the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Transport Mechanic, Transport Trailer Technician, or Diesel Engine Mechanic apprenticeships, a Certificate of Completion from SkilledTradesBC, a College of the Rockies certificate, and credit for 450 hours of work-based training toward any of those four trades. The programme suits candidates with good analytical skills, some mechanical ability, and strong observation skills who are comfortable working independently or in a team. As a shared foundation year across several related heavy-equipment trades, it lets students defer choosing a specific specialisation until after completing this common entry-level training, ahead of employer-sponsored apprenticeship and Red Seal certification.
Application Deadline:Domestic and international applicants to College of the Rockies both apply through EducationPlannerBC. For the 2027-28 academic year the general application window opens 1 November 2026, and applications received by 28 February 2027 get priority processing for Fall 2027 entry; admission is otherwise rolling with no fixed closing date. International applicants get a decision about two weeks after a complete application, with no separate published international deadline. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is competitive-entry: its window runs 1 November 2026 to 15 February 2027, with final transcripts due 28 February 2027 for Fall 2027 admission. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
