Program details
Overview
This programme delivers the technical training component of the Welder apprenticeship at College of the Rockies, for apprentices employed and sponsored by an employer through SkilledTradesBC registration, combining shop-based instruction with the on-the-job training that forms most of the overall apprenticeship, which typically spans one to five years and most commonly around four years. Levels progress from foundational to advanced welding techniques, with each level generally running 8 to 10 weeks, addressing processes such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), semi-automatic and automatic welding (GMAW, GMAW-P, MCAW, FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) on ferrous metals, stainless steel and aluminum. Completion leads to Red Seal certification, recognised across Canada as a nationally standardised qualification. The programme is intended for registered apprentices continuing sponsored technical training rather than new entrants to the trade, who instead begin with the Welder Foundation programme. Graduates go on to work for contractors, fabricators, aircraft and ship manufacturers, and oil, gas and mining companies, with the option to progress into supervisory roles or business ownership.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry to Welder: Apprenticeship at College of the Rockies runs through the SkilledTradesBC apprenticeship system: applicants must already be working in the trade and have an employer sponsor who registers them with SkilledTradesBC. The program page does not publish its own academic prerequisite courses, grades, or admission average, referring applicants instead to the level-by-level outlines in the college's academic calendar, which are not reproduced on the program page itself. Because the program page states no separate English-language score, College of the Rockies' general admission standard applies: TOEFL iBT overall 80 (minimum Reading 13, Writing 21, Listening 12, Speaking 18), IELTS Academic overall 6.0 with no band below 6.0, CAEL-CE overall 60 with no sub-score below 60, or PTE Academic overall 56; equivalents include English 12 or an approved alternative at the required grade combined with sufficient English-medium schooling, or 65% in BC English 12 for study completed in Canada. Applicants apply online through EducationPlannerBC and pay the non-refundable application fee before submitting transcripts and proof of English proficiency.
