Overview
Welder B and Welder A: Modular Training at College of the Rockies covers the Modular A and Modular B components of the Welder apprenticeship, sponsored programmes requiring employer sponsorship and SkilledTradesBC registration that combine on-the-job work-based training with technical shop instruction. Modular A, delivered over 8 weeks, covers Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) on stainless steel and low-carbon steel plate and pipe, and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) for stainless steel. Modular B, delivered over 16 weeks, covers semi-automatic and automatic welding processes including GMAW, GMAW-P, MCAW and FCAW, as well as GTAW on ferrous metals and aluminum. Both modules form part of the broader Welder apprenticeship, which leads to Red Seal certification recognised across Canada. The training is intended for apprentices already registered and sponsored by an employer, rather than new entrants to the trade, and builds the semi-automatic and automatic welding skills used across industrial, fabrication and construction settings. Graduates go on to work for contractors, fabricators, aircraft and ship manufacturers, and oil, gas and mining operations.
