Overview
This PhD in Biology is a thesis-based, research-intensive doctorate offered by Concordia University's Department of Biology, with two broad research streams: cell and molecular biology, including genomic and synthetic biology; and ecology, evolution, and conservation. Students work closely with a faculty mentor to master current research methods while building disciplinary knowledge, analytical skills, and critical thinking, culminating in an original dissertation. The program requires 90 credits, combining coursework, a comprehensive examination, and doctoral thesis research; students select a thesis supervisor by mutual agreement before or during the program. It is a full-time, on-campus doctorate delivered at Concordia's Sir George Williams campus, with Fall and Winter intakes. Application deadlines are February 1 for Canadian residents and January 15 for U.S. and international applicants for Fall entry, and September 1 (Canadian) or June 1 (U.S./international) for Winter entry. Admission requires an MSc in the life sciences with at least a B average overall across undergraduate and graduate studies. Concordia states that funding packages, including awards and assistantships, are generally available to students in thesis-based programs such as this one.
