Program details
Overview
The PhD in Geography, Urban and Environmental Studies is a thesis-based doctoral program in Concordia University's Department of Geography, Planning and Environment that develops students' understanding of how humans interact with the environment, including the socio-cultural and environmental dimensions of human settlements as they evolve. Students pursue original research under faculty supervision and complete a 200-hour work placement as part of the program; students also teach after completing a required seminar. Admission depends on the availability of a faculty member in the department able to serve as research supervisor. The degree requires 90 credits and has a nominal full-time duration of four years, based at the Sir George Williams campus. New students are admitted in the fall term only, and funding packages, including awards and assistantships, are generally available to students in the program.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants normally require an MA or MSc in Geography, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field from a recognized university. Admission is contingent on the availability of an appropriate faculty member in the department to serve as supervisor. Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate that their knowledge of English is sufficient to pursue graduate studies in their chosen field. The application deadline for fall admission is February 1 for Canadian residents and January 15 for U.S. and international applicants; winter and summer admission are not available.
