Overview
There is a growing demand for skilled trade workers in Canada, and Conestoga College is meeting this demand by offering a variety of skilled trades education. Are you interested in learning how to become a welder or metal fabricator? This program might be right for you! This one-year program covers all the theoretical and practical learning outcomes for Level 1 of both the Welder (456A) and Metal Fabricator – Fitter (437A) apprenticeship programs in Ontario. As a student in this program, you will have the opportunity to develop welding skills in our state-of-the-art facility, using modern equipment with the common arc welding processes such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW or 'stick'), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW or 'MIG'), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or 'TIG'). If you decide to pursue an apprenticeship in either trade, you may be exempt from this level of in-school training. You will be provided opportunities to challenge welding skills qualification tests as required by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB). (Extra fees payable to this external weld testing authority will apply; these tests are optional.) The instructors in our programs combine years of teaching experience with decades of work in the welding industry. As a graduate of this program, you'll be ready for an apprenticeship as a welder or metal fabricator.

Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or applicant age 19 or older with mature-student status. Conestoga asks for Grade 12 compulsory English at C or U level, or equivalent, or its own Preparatory Communications (COMM1251), plus Grade 11 Mathematics at C, M (University/College) or U level, or equivalent, or Preparatory Mathematics for Trades (MATH1420), with a minimum cumulative average of 60% across the English and Mathematics prerequisites. Applicants whose prior instruction was not in English must demonstrate English-language proficiency; the programme page does not itself publish a domestic test-score table, so evidence follows Conestoga's general English-proficiency policy, and Canadian citizens or permanent residents with transcripts from outside Canada need a course-by-course credential evaluation from a service such as ICAS or WES. Basic computer literacy is expected, and students have the opportunity to complete Canadian Welding Bureau welder-qualification tests during the programme.

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca (college code CONS): for the Fall 2027 intake the online application opens 26 September 2026, the equal consideration date is 1 February 2027, offers may be issued from 1 November 2026, and accepted offers must be confirmed by 1 May 2027; most oversubscribed programs stop accepting applications after 1 February 2027, though many programs remain open afterward. Conestoga does not publish a separate equal-consideration date for its January intake. International applicants apply directly to Conestoga and are assessed on a rolling, first-come, first-served basis until each program fills; no fixed international closing date is published. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
