The Interdisciplinary PhD at Dalhousie University is designed for students whose research interests cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Candidates either combine the methods and knowledge of two or three established disciplines or pursue research in an inherently interdisciplinary field such as the environment, health administration, international development, law, biology, or information management. Each program of study is individually designed with a committee of faculty drawn from multiple departments rather than following a fixed departmental curriculum. The program is delivered on campus, with a nominal full-time length of five years, and admits students in September, January, and May each year through a two-phase application process for each intake. Entry requires a research-based master's degree and a combined undergraduate-and-master's grade point average of at least 3.70. Applicants must demonstrate a high level of English proficiency and show they have sufficient financial resources to cover fees, research costs, and living expenses for the duration of the program.
