The Doctor of Philosophy in Individual Interdisciplinary Studies allows students at the University of Manitoba to design a doctoral program that combines substantial elements from at least two, and no more than four, existing graduate programs into a single course of study that falls outside established departmental boundaries. Rather than following a fixed curriculum, each student works with an advisory committee drawn from the relevant departments to formulate a research proposal and negotiate an individualized program of study before admission is finalized. Eligibility requirements are more stringent than those for standard discipline-based graduate programs, reflecting the additional planning and cross-departmental coordination the degree requires. Students are expected to maintain a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0, with no grade below C+, throughout the program, and must complete an original doctoral thesis. Full-time students can expect to complete the degree in about four years.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must assemble an advisory committee spanning at least two, and no more than four, departments or units, formulate a research proposal, and negotiate a program of study with that committee in advance of admission. Eligibility requirements are more stringent than those for standard discipline-based graduate programs.
