Program details

Overview

This is a professional Master of Architecture program intended as an entry point to architectural licensure and practice, delivered full-time and in person over 20 months. The curriculum combines seven core courses spanning design, humanities, technology, and professional practice with elective courses, including a design-focused 'Free Lab', an eight-month co-op work term, and an eight-month design thesis, with a practicum offered as an alternative program option. Electives allow students to focus on an area of interest such as housing, urban design, or building technology. The program is intended for applicants who already hold a pre-professional architecture degree equivalent to Dalhousie's Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies; those without prior architectural study are directed toward that undergraduate program first, while holders of a professional architecture degree are not eligible. Admission is assessed through a portfolio of design work, a statement of intent describing an area of emphasis, academic transcripts, a resume, and references, with selection described as competitive. The program states it holds professional accreditation. It suits students seeking professional design training combined with workplace experience through the co-op term, ahead of pursuing licensure as an architect.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: The Master of Architecture requires at least four years of prior university education culminating in a pre-professional architecture degree fully equivalent to Dalhousie's own Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies curriculum; applicants without prior architectural study are directed to the BEDS programme instead, and those already holding a professional degree that qualifies them to practise in their home country are ineligible. A minimum GPA of 3.00 is required, with a B average specifically in design courses (3.70 GPA for scholarship eligibility). English-language proficiency follows the Faculty of Graduate Studies' general policy, which for most applicants is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 90 overall (no section below 20), since no separate score is set on this programme's own page. Applicants must submit a design portfolio, a statement of intent, a resume, two confidential references and transcripts. Deadlines are February 1 for Canada/US applicants and December 1 for all others; the programme starts in May.

Application Details

Start Date: May
Application Deadline: Dalhousie's live Dates and Deadlines page still shows the September 2026 entry cycle as of mid-September 2026, not the 2027 cycle. For that cycle, Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) and Bachelor of Social Work close February 15, 2026; the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (Architecture) closes March 1, 2026; and the Health Sciences post-diploma option closes June 15, 2026. All other undergraduate programmes are considered on a rolling, space-available basis for both domestic and international applicants, with no separate international closing date published; May 15, 2026 is only the deposit and English-proficiency deadline, not an application deadline. Dalhousie has not yet published September 2027 entry dates. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
