Overview
Community, Recreation and Leadership Training is a three-year Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC) technical program at Dawson College that trains students to plan, lead and evaluate recreational and community-based activities and events. The curriculum builds leadership, entrepreneurship, administrative and human-resource management skills through more than 580 hours of practical experience across three internship placements, alongside five group-based intensive courses held at outdoor retreat centres. All students receive First Aid Certification, and final-year students lead a camp for first- and second-year students as part of their training. Graduates may also earn a Peace Studies Certificate or an Environment and Sustainability Certificate alongside the diploma. The program suits students interested in community organizing, outdoor education, recreation programming and youth leadership. Graduates find roles in community organizations, recreation departments, camps and non-profit organizations, and some continue to university studies in related fields.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Requires a Quebec Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES), or an academic background judged equivalent to the DES. Applicants must attend a mandatory interview and information session, typically held in March or April, and must pass a mandatory police background check in the first semester of the program.
