Overview
Offered by Douglas College's Mathematics and Science Teaching department at the New Westminster campus, this 30-credit graduate diploma is aimed at current K-8 teachers who want to build the confidence to lead mathematics and science teaching in their classroom, school and district. The two-year program is practical and hands-on: students experiment in chemistry labs, examine geological formations with a geologist and observe stars with an astronomer, while courses focus on teaching theory and applied skills they can take straight back to their own classrooms. Projects are shaped around each participant's professional goals, such as organising a math or science club, delivering a workshop to peers, improving or creating a district teaching resource, or building curriculum for their school. Classes run during evenings, weekends and online. Enrolment is limited and the intake runs once every two years; applicants need a baccalaureate degree and a BC Professional Teaching certificate or eligibility for one, plus a CV, a reference letter and a letter of intent. Graduates are eligible for TQS upgrading.

Admission Requirements: Candidates must hold a baccalaureate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and hold, or be eligible to obtain, a Professional Teaching certificate from the BC Teachers' Council. They must also submit a current curriculum vitae; one letter of reference speaking to the applicant's ability to undertake advanced work in education, ideally from a school or district administrator, district resource person, or colleague with related post-degree experience; and a letter of intent covering long- and short-term career goals, education background, motivations for applying, and a description of current or short-term teaching contexts that demonstrate access to teaching mathematics and/or science.
