Overview
The Early Childhood Education Infant/Toddler Post-Basic Certificate focuses on observing, assessing, planning and guiding the development of these children, both individually and in groups. You'll learn how to manage the operation of a child-care setting and how to confidently communicate and collaborate with children, families and your colleagues all through interactive online classes.
Through a practicum placement, you'll experience learning from theory to practice in a variety of early childhood education settings, including childcare, preschool and others. Graduates are qualified to apply for a provincial license to practise as an Infant/Toddler Educator. This infant toddler certificate program is for certificate graduates from an accredited ECE program in B.C. who want an additional post-basic credential in Infant/Toddler ECE.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Beyond Douglas College's General College Admission Requirements, this Post-Basic Certificate in Early Childhood Education: Infant/Toddler requires completion of Certificate-level Early Childhood Education studies at Douglas College, or equivalent post-secondary training, with proof of an Early Childhood Education licence and an overall average of "C+" across the ECE certificate courses. Applicants must submit a work-history form and two references, from employers or from a former instructor and an employer, and suitability is assessed on emotional stability, physical health, formal education, work experience, ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, alignment with departmental values, and personal suitability. Applicants must be 18 by 31 December of their entry year, complete a Criminal Record Check arranged through the Office of the Registrar, and complete a medical declaration or assessment confirming a satisfactory level of physical and emotional health for the programme's practical placements. Applicants must also meet the College's English Language Proficiency requirement (for example IELTS Academic overall 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 83).

Start Date:Douglas runs three fifteen-week semesters a year: Fall from September to December, Winter from January to April and Summer from May to August. The programme page lists intakes in Fall (September). The Fall 2026 semester began on 8 September 2026 and Winter 2027 classes begin on 4 January 2027.
Application Deadline:Douglas publishes college-wide application windows rather than a single date for every programme, and the domestic and international timetables are different. Applications for a semester open about eleven months ahead, at 9:00 a.m. on the first business day of the opening month: 1 October for the following Fall. Douglas labels this an open-enrolment programme, so domestic online applications run until 4:00 p.m. on the Friday before the semester starts — that was 4 September 2026 for Fall 2026 and is 1 January 2027 for Winter 2027 — or until the seats are gone, whichever comes first. A late window (from 1 August for Fall) is open only to applicants who have already met every admission requirement and can hand over documents at once. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS follow Douglas’s separate college-wide dates, not the domestic ones: the Fall (September) 2026 intake closed on 31 May 2026, Winter (January) 2027 closes on 30 September 2026, and Summer (May) 2027 closes on 31 January 2027. Limited-enrolment programmes can fill before those dates and open-enrolment ones last only while seats do, so Douglas advises applying early enough to leave room for a study-permit application.
