Program details

Overview

The certificate blends practical placements with theoretical coursework to prepare graduates for work with children from birth through age eight. Delivered entirely online, the program teaches students to observe children, assess their development and guide it for individuals as well as groups, and to communicate and work alongside children, their caregivers, the wider community and fellow professionals. The program also covers promoting health and nutrition and gaining hands-on experience running a child-care setting. Graduates become eligible to apply for a provincial licence to practise as an early childhood educator in licensed preschool and child-care centres. Extra coursework can be added to qualify for a Special Needs credential and to progress toward the full Early Childhood Education diploma.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The general college admission requirements, and you must turn 18 by 31 December of the year you start. SUITABILITY is judged on emotional stability, physical health, formal education, ability to work in a team and life experience, and is evidenced by: two reference letters from people not related to you — character references from reputable community members or people who know your work with young children, and not written by whoever completes your volunteer verification form (if you already hold an ECE basic licence to practise, you complete a work history form that includes references instead); evidence of 20 hours of volunteer or paid work in a licensed early childhood education setting with children from birth to age six, with the documentation form submitted before you can enrol in practicum courses; a criminal record check, with information from Enrolment Services; and a medical declaration or assessment showing satisfactory physical and emotional health, which Douglas requires because of the workload and the close contact with people in practical settings. Applicants who already have 9 or more post-secondary credits must be in good academic standing, meaning a GPA of at least 1.5, for any Applied Community Studies programme. Reference and volunteer or paid-work experience forms are published under the More Information tab on the programme page. The programme page carries an international application block. International applicants must also clear Douglas's separately published international entry standard on top of anything listed here: for undergraduate study that is a final-year school average of at least 60 percent (or one of the college's age routes) plus Grade 11 Mathematics at C for most programmes, and for post-degree and post-baccalaureate study a bachelor's degree of at least three years with a cumulative average of at least 60 percent. The international English minimums are TOEFL iBT 83 (writing 21 or better for post-degree and post-baccalaureate credentials), IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band under 6.0 for those same credentials, PTE Academic 56, Duolingo 110, CAEL 60, CLB 8 in each skill, Cambridge CAE 75, Cambridge CPE 60, or EIKEN Grade 1.

Application Details

Start Date: Douglas runs three fifteen-week semesters a year: Fall from September to December, Winter from January to April and Summer from May to August. The programme page lists intakes in Fall (September) and Winter (January). The Fall 2026 semester began on 8 September 2026 and Winter 2027 classes begin on 4 January 2027.
Application Deadline: Douglas publishes college-wide application windows rather than a single date for every programme, and the domestic and international timetables are different. DOMESTIC APPLICANTS apply on EducationPlannerBC. Applications for a semester open about eleven months ahead, at 9:00 a.m. on the first business day of the opening month: 1 October for the following Fall, 1 February for the following Winter. Douglas labels this an open-enrolment programme, so domestic online applications run until 4:00 p.m. on the Friday before the semester starts — that was 4 September 2026 for Fall 2026 and is 1 January 2027 for Winter 2027 — or until the seats are gone, whichever comes first. A late window (from 1 August for Fall, from 1 December for Winter) is open only to applicants who have already met every admission requirement and can hand over documents at once. Reference and volunteer or paid-work experience forms are part of this application and are published under the programme page’s More Information tab. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS follow Douglas’s separate college-wide dates, not the domestic ones: the Fall (September) 2026 intake closed on 31 May 2026, Winter (January) 2027 closes on 30 September 2026, and Summer (May) 2027 closes on 31 January 2027. Limited-enrolment programmes can fill before those dates and open-enrolment ones last only while seats do, so Douglas advises applying early enough to leave room for a study-permit application. Read from the programme page and the college deadline pages on 6 September 2026; Douglas had not yet published Summer 2027 domestic closing dates.
