Overview
Firefighters take responsibility for things many people wouldn’t want to carry on their shoulders including saving lives, homes, buildings, schools and churches and protecting the environment. Sounds a lot like a job description for a real-life superhero – are you ready to apply? Students in this program will: Learn from curriculum based on the current National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) standards and recognized across North America. Apply practical skills in simulated and controlled live fire training scenarios on campus and at local fire training facilities. Be eligible to take the exams for NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2 (Firefighter 1 and 2) as well as the NFPA 472 (Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations), after graduation.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Durham College's minimum entry is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Mature Student Status. The Firefighter - Pre-Service Education and Training (compressed) certificate adds Grade 12 English at the C or U level, Grade 11 mathematics at the C, M or U level, and one of Grade 11 or 12 biology, chemistry, physics or exercise science at the C, M or U level; it states no minimum admission average. The program page states no English-language test score of its own for international applicants and points to Durham's institution-wide requirement for certificate, diploma and advanced diploma programs, set out on the college's international admissions page: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80 with no section below 20, PTE Academic 53 overall with no section below 49, CAEL 60 overall with no section below 60, or Duolingo English Test 105; domestic applicants may instead evidence English with the required Grade 12 English credit. Before starting, students must rent bunker gear and buy uniforms, personal protective equipment and CSA-approved leather safety shoes from approved vendors, and provide proof of current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification, valid for the program's duration.
