Overview
The PhD in Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal develops advanced knowledge, intellectual rigour, scientific curiosity, and creativity for high-level professional practice, scientific research, and university teaching. The programme is designed for engineers and scientists interested in production, organization and technological innovation, or systems analysis and optimization. It builds in-depth expertise in the candidate's chosen research axis, broader knowledge across industrial engineering, and the ability to evaluate scientific literature and apply rigorous research methods, while contributing to the advancement of theoretical and applied knowledge. Candidates admitted directly from a bachelor's degree, or who do not hold a master's in industrial engineering, may be required to complete supplementary coursework. Students may include international activities such as courses or internships abroad, or a co-supervised thesis, in their programme. The programme totals 90 credits: a minimum of 15 credits of graduate coursework and 75 credits of research leading to a doctoral thesis. Graduates receive the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).
Requirements
Admission Requirements: To be admitted to a doctoral program, candidates must hold a bachelor's or master's degree from Polytechnique Montreal or a recognized equivalent, have a strong academic record, and secure the agreement of a professor willing to supervise the research. A strong academic record alone does not guarantee admission to the program; the candidate must also obtain a professor's commitment to supervise the thesis.
