Overview
Earn an Ontario College Certificate in this two-level Personal Support Worker program. Graduates have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide personal care and home management to clients. They work in community and institutional settings.You’ll begin the program by creating a strong foundation in the fundamentals of personal support. You’ll learn about health and wellness and how the human body functions. You’ll also examine mental health issues and life transition theories.In addition to classroom instruction, you’ll complete placements in long-term care facilities and a community placement. Here, you’ll gain valuable experience providing care to clients. You’ll begin your career with a highly developed set of experiences to draw on as you enter the workforce. This program also utilizes simulation learning in our cutting-edge simulation labs.Personal Support Workers’ clients are stable and have clearly identified needs that caregivers do not expect to change significantly. They work under the supervision of care or service teams, like nurses and other care providers, as well as under the direction of the client. Admission Requirements: One of Fanshawe's most open entry points: an OSSD whose courses come from any of the College (C), University (U), University/College (M) and Open (O) streams, or an equivalent qualification, or mature-applicant status. Applicants without a high school diploma are directed to the Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Grade 12 equivalency certificate. No additional prerequisite courses are listed. English at certificate and diploma level: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band under 5.5, TOEFL iBT 79 on the pre-2026 scale (4.5 overall with no band under 4 on the 2026 scale), PTE Academic 53 with no band under 45, CAEL 60 overall with 50 per band and 80 in listening, Duolingo 105 with no sub-score under 95, Cambridge English 169, LanguageCert Academic 65. Fanshawe recommends, without requiring, any Grade 12 English (C, U or O), Grade 11 or 12 Biology (C or U), and Grade 11 Health Care (C) or Grade 12 Human Development Throughout the Lifespan (M), and notes that students need enough conversational English to take direction safely from the care team. Where applicants exceed seats, selection is by preference for Ontario permanent residents, application received by 1 February, then achievement in the requirements. Applicants already working as a Home Support Worker or Health Care Aide may qualify for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition credit toward part of the coursework. Read the post-admission conditions carefully: Standard First Aid with BLS for Health Care Providers, evidence of good health including immunisations, and a Police Vulnerable Sector Check are all required, and Fanshawe warns that placement agencies will not take students with a criminal record — anyone refused placement on that basis can finish the academic coursework but will not qualify to graduate.

International applicants apply directly to Fanshawe (CAD 100 fee) and face fixed document deadlines rather than a single closing date: for the current intakes, study-permit and conditions-met documents are due 10/15 August 2026 (Fall), 9/15 December 2026 (Winter) and 5/15 April 2027 (Summer); missing a deadline can mean deferral to the next intake.
