Overview
Course content is based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and includes the following topics: fire behavior, suppression, ventilation, incident management systems, command and control, hazardous materials, forcible entry, firefighter survival, auto extrication, confined space awareness, technical rescue, fire attack scenarios, fitness and wellness, fire prevention principles, public education and medical training that includes the Red Cross Emergency Medical Response (EMR) and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). To further assist students, we offer fire industry-specific interviewing techniques and career planning strategies to prepare them for the application and interview process within the fire services.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma including Grade 12 College (C) English and Grade 12 College (C) Mathematics, with the majority of credits at College (C) or Open (O) level; Grade 12 C courses are accepted where a Grade 11 C course is listed. Applicants aged 19 or older without an OSSD may write the Skillsmarker assessment. A mandatory physician assessment must confirm fitness for strenuous activity, normal unaided hearing, and vision suitable for classroom and fire-ground duty (uncorrected vision of 20/30 or better is recommended, not required); a valid York University Firefighter Fitness Assessment or equivalent is required before progressing to Semester Two, alongside the college's other Non-Academic Requirements. The programme page sets no language requirement of its own, so Fleming's institution-wide English proficiency standard for diploma and certificate programmes applies: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80, Duolingo English Test 105, or PTE Academic 46, or completion of Level 8 of Fleming's own English Language Bridge programme.
