The Solar Energy Technician program is a 24-week, part-time certificate delivered fully online as distance education, leading to a George Brown College certificate. It provides training in the installation, design and maintenance of residential and commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, covering safety protocols, electrical and electronics fundamentals, system components and sizing, performance analysis, and maintenance and troubleshooting techniques. Circuit theory is integrated with laboratory simulation using CircuitLogix software (2D and 3D), which models batteries, battery banks, converters, inverters, automatic transfer switches, solar arrays and other components used in solar power generation and storage. The program is presented in 12 modules combining text, animation and audio content with an online final exam per module. Enrolment is open year-round with no fixed completion schedule, allowing students to progress at their own pace, though the average part-time completion time is about 24 weeks. A Windows-compatible computer is required, since the simulation software does not run on macOS, Chromebook or Linux systems.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The academic prerequisite for students entering the Solar Energy Technician program is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (with credits at or above the general level) or its equivalent, or mature student status. An electronics background is helpful but not essential. If you are 19 years or older and do not have a high school diploma, you may apply as a mature student.
