Overview
Students prepare for a career as a Small Engine Mechanic, Powersports equipment technician or as an employee at a multi-line dealership. They develop a concentrated understanding of small to medium sized engines and related systems for off-road vehicles and powered equipment. This includes gasoline engines, diesel engines, fuel management systems, electrical systems, frames, steering and suspension systems, transmission and auxiliary power systems, braking systems, hydraulic systems and onboard computer systems. A significant hands-on component allows individuals to develop practical and technical skills to meet the current needs of the Small Engine and Powersports industries, and will provide a basis to respond to emerging trends in the field. Finally, students become effective communicators and problem solvers who will have an awareness of environmental issues, effective customer service, and basic business operations.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Georgian requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent for direct entry to this Certificate, or mature-student status for applicants without one. The programme's own prerequisite is Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U). Mature applicants aged 19 or older, non-secondary-school applicants, and home-schooled applicants can also be considered through equivalent courses, upgrading, GED completion, or equivalency testing, and applicants with prior post-secondary coursework or relevant life or learning experience may qualify through Georgian's Credit for Prior Learning process. The programme notes that the trade demands manual dexterity and lifting capacity, and advises applicants with physical concerns to raise them with the program coordinator.
