Electrical Techniques - Industrial Electrician Apprenticeship is a certificate program at Humber Polytechnic that delivers the required in-school training for apprentices registered as Industrial Electricians (trade code 442A) with Skilled Trades Ontario. Training is delivered at Humber's North Campus Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology across four semesters of in-school blocks lasting 8 to 10 weeks each, alternating with employer-based on-the-job training. Coursework covers the Canadian Electrical Code, industrial electrical systems, controls, instrumentation and programmable logic controller (PLC) fundamentals, renewable energy generating and storage systems, technical drawings and trade calculations, and the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of industrial electrical equipment. Apprentices also develop workplace safety practices and professional communication skills for advanced manufacturing, industrial and automation environments. Each in-school block is scheduled by Skilled Trades Ontario, which issues an Offer of Classroom Training letter confirming the apprentice's place. The program is not open to international applicants, since admission requires registration as an apprentice with an Ontario employer sponsor.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is not a direct application to Humber: applicants must first secure an employer willing to sponsor them as an apprentice and register with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, then register through Skilled Trades Ontario (STO). STO schedules apprentices for the in-school training portion and sends an Offer of Classroom Training letter confirming the block. Required preparation is Grade 12. Applicants typically work with their sponsoring employer for approximately one year before attending Humber. High school students in grade 11 or 12 may enter the trade through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). This program is not open to international applicants.
