Horticulture Techniques - Apprenticeship is a certificate program at Humber Polytechnic that delivers the required in-school training for apprentices registered in Ontario's horticulture and landscape trades (program code 441C). Training is delivered at Humber's North Campus and the Humber Arboretum, scheduled during the industry's winter slowdown to minimize time away from work. The curriculum covers horticulture principles, plant identification, landscape construction and installation, grounds maintenance, plant propagation and greenhouse operations, site assessment, arboriculture, and sustainable landscape practices. Apprentices apply classroom learning in the Humber Arboretum, a 250-acre botanical garden, as well as in a weather-protected construction lab used to build features such as decks, gazebos and retaining walls. The program prepares apprentices for work with landscape contractors, municipalities, golf courses, botanical gardens, parks and nurseries across Ontario's green industry. The program is not open to international applicants, since admission requires registration as an apprentice with an Ontario employer sponsor.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is not a direct application to Humber: applicants must first secure an employer willing to sponsor them as an apprentice and register with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, then register through Skilled Trades Ontario (STO). STO schedules apprentices for the in-school training portion and sends an Offer of Classroom Training letter confirming the block. Required preparation is Grade 12. Applicants typically work with their sponsoring employer for approximately one year before attending Humber. High school students in grade 11 or 12 may enter the trade through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).
