Program details

Overview

The Apprenticeship in Production Horticulturist trains apprentices for a career in commercial horticulture production while they remain employed full-time in the industry. An apprenticeship is established when an employer and employee sign and register an Apprentice and Sponsor Registration form with SkilledTradesBC, which administers the BC Apprenticeship system; apprentices may also apply for credit toward work-based training completed before registration. The program comprises three technical training levels, typically completed one level per year, delivered at the Langley campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Levels one and two cover fundamental horticulture knowledge and skills over six-week technical training sessions; level three focuses on production horticulture, including nursery propagation, container and field nursery production, pest management, phytosanitary certification, and irrigation and drainage systems, over an eight-week session. The curriculum is developed and approved by the horticulture industry. Entry requires completed KPU Apprentice Registration, active registration in the BC Apprenticeship system, and a valid Trade Worker Identification number from SkilledTradesBC.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed KPU Apprentice Registration, hold active apprentice registration in the BC Apprenticeship system, and hold a valid Trade Worker Identification number from SkilledTradesBC (Level 1 through Level 3); those without a SkilledTradesBC ID must complete an apprenticeship registration form through SkilledTradesBC before enrolling.
