The Languages program at Lakehead University centres on a French major, with the option to also study Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian, Ojibwe, Cree, Mandarin, or the Classics. Students build advanced competency in French reading, writing, and speaking, alongside cultural literacy and communication skills. First-year coursework covers foundational oral and intermediate French, with upper-year courses in literature, linguistics, and cultural studies; students may complete an honours thesis project in fourth year. An exchange program to France is available through the Ontario/Rhone-Alpes Student Exchange Program, and conversation classes develop oral skills. Graduates reach fluency in spoken French and intermediate-level writing aligned with level B2 of the DELF certification. Credentials range from a three-year Bachelor of Arts in French to a six-year Honours Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Senior). The program is delivered on campus at the Thunder Bay campus.
