This apprenticeship trains electricians to install, alter, repair and maintain electrical systems that provide heat, light, power, control, signal and fire alarm functions in buildings. Coursework covers electrical theory, the Canadian Electrical Code, heating and cooling systems, transformers, three-phase principles, circuit fundamentals and fire alarm systems. The program follows a four-period apprenticeship structure: periods 1 and 2 combine 8 weeks of classroom instruction with a minimum of 1,560 hours of on-the-job training, while periods 3 and 4 combine 10 weeks of classroom instruction with a minimum of 1,500 hours of on-the-job training. Instruction is delivered face-to-face at the Vermilion campus. Applicants must find an employer or sponsor who is a journeyperson, or who employs a journeyperson, in the electrical trade before registering for technical training.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Recommended preparation is an Alberta High School Diploma with English 30-2, Math 30-3, and Physics 30, Chemistry 30 or Science 30, plus related Career and Technology Studies courses. The minimum requirement is completion of English 20-2, Math 20-3 and Science 10, or all five GED/CAEC exams, or a passing score on the college entrance exam. Applicants must also secure employment with an employer or sponsor who is a journeyperson, or who employs a journeyperson, in the electrical trade.
