Overview
The Asian Studies Diploma in Arts and Science is a two-year, university-transfer programme focused on the cultures of the Asia-Pacific region, including China, Japan, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and BC's Asian communities. Introduced in 1983 as the first two-year college programme of its kind in Canada, it prepares students for transfer into Asian Studies and related social science departments at university. Courses and seminars give students in-depth insight into regional history, society, and cultural patterns, drawing interest from students who have lived or traveled in Asia as well as first-generation Asian-Canadians and international students. The programme also situates this study within the region's ongoing economic growth and its significance to Canada's relationships with Pacific nations. Courses are offered full-time and in-person, with intakes in September, January, and May. As of the Fall 2025 semester, admissions to the diploma are suspended until further notice.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) or must be 19 years of age or older; international applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation or the equivalent. The English language requirement is Category 3, met through English 12 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 50%, or an approved English proficiency assessment. Admission to a program at Langara College does not guarantee registration in required courses, and students admitted on the basis of an English proficiency assessment may need to take one or more additional English courses to meet course prerequisites.
