The Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship is a four-year Red Seal trade program combining on-campus instruction with workplace training. Apprentices spend eight weeks each year at Lethbridge Polytechnic learning and practising technical skills, then apply that knowledge for the rest of the year while working with a qualified mechanic. Coursework covers interpreting work orders, performing scheduled maintenance, diagnosing mechanical issues, and replacing or repairing components on heavy equipment used in agriculture, construction, forestry, mining, and transportation. Delivery is face-to-face on the main campus, with some blended and hyflex components. Applications are submitted through Alberta's MyTradesecrets apprenticeship portal, and apprentices must be registered with an employer to progress through the four levels of training. On completing the program and passing the Red Seal interprovincial examination, graduates receive certified Journeyman papers, recognized across Canada. The program is not open to international students, since it requires concurrent employment with an Alberta-registered training employer throughout its four years.
