Overview
International Development Studies is an interdisciplinary program addressing global issues such as poverty and inequality, governance, sustainability, health, human rights and social justice, drawing on perspectives from across the social sciences and humanities. Housed within the Institute for the Study of International Development, one of the Faculty of Arts' largest programs, it combines academic study with attention to real-world development challenges. Students engage with themes including economic development and poverty reduction, governance and public policy, conflict and peacebuilding, environmental sustainability, health and education, migration and urbanization, with particular emphasis on the Global South. The program is offered by the Faculty of Arts, with applicants admitted directly to that faculty, and leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants apply directly to the Faculty of Arts. The only stated academic prerequisite is Grade 12 (or equivalent senior secondary) English or French matching the language of instruction. McGill's requirements vary by educational background (Quebec CEGEP, Ontario, other Canadian provinces, U.S. or international curricula); grades equal to or above published minimums do not guarantee admission, and the review considers the complete academic record.
