Program details
Overview
The Accounting Major is a 72-credit component of the Bachelor of Commerce offered by the Desautels Faculty of Management. The program centres on preparing, interpreting, and using the financial and managerial information of an organization, with required coursework spanning financial accounting, managerial accounting, auditing, and taxation. Sixty of the program's 72 credits come from required courses, beginning with the Management Core, which covers financial accounting fundamentals, organizational behaviour, business statistics, managerial and macroeconomic analysis, data programming for business, and information technology management, before moving into accounting-specific coursework. Because the major sits within the B.Com. structure, students also complete the broader Desautels Faculty of Management core curriculum alongside their accounting specialization. The program is designed for students planning careers in financial reporting, management accounting, external or internal auditing, or corporate and personal taxation, and provides a foundation relevant to students intending to pursue professional accounting designations after graduation. The combination of a common management core with a focused accounting sequence is meant to give students both broad business literacy and depth in accounting practice, suiting those who want a commerce degree with a clear specialization in financial and managerial reporting.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Accounting Major page sets no admission criteria of its own; it only lists the Management Core and major courses. Entry into the Bachelor of Commerce is decided by the Desautels Faculty of Management, whose own admission page states the BCom is highly selective and that meeting its minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, deferring the detailed criteria to McGill's Undergraduate Admissions Guide. Quebec CEGEP graduates are admitted directly with a Diploma of Collegial Studies including the Management-required prerequisites; applicants from other Canadian provinces are assessed on their senior secondary record (Ontario applicants on the average of their 'Top 6' 4U/4M courses); international applicants are assessed by their own educational system and normally require an additional Freshman year. English proficiency is required unless exempt: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo 125, or PTE Academic 65.
Application Details
Application Deadline:McGill sets deadlines by educational background rather than citizenship. For entry in September 2027, Quebec CEGEP and Quebec high-school applicants must apply by 1 March 2027 (documents due 15 April 2027); applicants from Ontario and other Canadian provinces must apply by 1 February 2027 (documents due 4 May 2027). International applicants, including those on a U.S. high-school or IB curriculum, must apply by 15 January 2027 (documents due 1 March 2027). The application portal opens 1 October 2026. Deadlines are firm and late applications are not accepted; admission is not rolling, and decisions are released competitively from November through July depending on school system. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
