Overview
The PhD in German at McGill University, offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts, combines rigorous philological inquiry into the history of German literature with a broader cultural studies approach attentive to the historical and technological dimensions of German. Students may specialize in literature, intellectual history, film, media, or digital humanities. The program gives students the opportunity to spend time abroad in Germany and Austria and to take part in conference and workshop organization, and the department is connected to research facilities including the Moving Image Research Laboratory. The program is research-based and culminates in a doctoral dissertation. Graduates go on to teaching roles in German Studies and related fields at universities, CEGEPs, and high schools, as well as careers outside academia. Admission is through the Fall intake only.
