Overview
Hispanic Studies covers the literature, intellectual history and civilizations of Spain and Hispanic America, combined with development of Spanish and Portuguese language skills. Students build communication and critical reasoning abilities while gaining insight into the culture of other regional, linguistic and national groups, situating language study within its literary and historical context. Coursework progresses from language instruction through literary and cultural analysis, drawing on texts and media from across the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world. The program is offered by the Faculty of Arts, with applicants admitted directly to that faculty, and leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree. It can be combined with complementary courses in related fields such as Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants apply directly to the Faculty of Arts. The only stated academic prerequisite is Grade 12 (or equivalent senior secondary) English or French matching the language of instruction. McGill's requirements vary by educational background (Quebec CEGEP, Ontario, other Canadian provinces, U.S. or international curricula); grades equal to or above published minimums do not guarantee admission, and the review considers the complete academic record.
