Overview
McMaster's Midwifery program leads to a Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) in Midwifery, delivered jointly with Toronto Metropolitan University, and focuses on primary health care for pregnant people during low-risk pregnancy, labour, birth, and the six weeks following birth. Alongside clinical-skills training, the curriculum includes health education, counselling, and interprofessional collaboration, framing childbirth as a social, cultural, and biological process. Clinical education combines weekly problem-based tutorials with extended placements designed to give students continuity of care with the same clients across a midwifery practice, plus hospital-based experience working alongside obstetricians; students are placed with several practices over the course of the program, which requires travel and, at times, relocation at the student's own expense. Admission Requirements: The Midwifery Education Program, run jointly by McMaster and Toronto Metropolitan University, leads to a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery. Admission is by selection following an admissions interview and requires a minimum grade of 85% in each of English, Biology and Chemistry, plus an overall minimum consideration average of 85%, alongside a supplementary application. High school applicants may apply while one or more Grade 12 prerequisites are still in progress by February 1, provided the Grade 11 prerequisite(s) were completed with at least 85% by the same date; any offer of admission is conditional on successfully completing all Grade 12 prerequisites. International applicants present an equivalent secondary credential and undergo the same selective process. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an accepted test score: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 86 overall with a minimum of 20 per component for tests taken before 21 January 2026, unless exempt through at least four years of full-time study in English.
