Program details

Overview

This is a second-entry Bachelor of Health Sciences (Physician Assistant) program that prepares graduates to practise medicine under physician supervision. The 24-month curriculum uses problem-based learning to build clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills before students move into an extended clinical phase in the second year, consisting of supervised placements across a range of medical specialties including family medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, and psychiatry. Placements take place in Hamilton as well as at McMaster's regional campuses in St. Catharines and Kitchener/Waterloo and at other sites across Ontario, with some elective placements allowing students to explore an area of particular interest. As a second-entry credential, admission requires prior post-secondary study rather than direct entry from secondary school. The program suits individuals who already hold some post-secondary background and want a condensed, practice-oriented route into a physician assistant career, working alongside physicians in clinics, hospitals, and community health settings, or moving into research, education, or health administration roles after graduation.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Physician Assistant program does not list programme-specific admission requirements beyond eligibility on this page; applicants instead meet McMaster's general undergraduate and English-proficiency requirements published on the Future Students site, alongside program-specific screening confirmed on the program's own admissions page. Admission is not available directly from secondary school: applicants must complete at least two years of full-time post-secondary study (20 half-courses or 10 full courses) at an accredited university, with the entering class averaging a 3.75 GPA; the degree can be in any discipline and no specific prerequisite courses are required, though courses using small-group, self-directed or inquiry-based learning are considered good preparation. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet McMaster's proficiency requirement (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 86 with a minimum of 20 per component for tests before 21 January 2026). No MCAT, GRE, PA-CAT, CASPer, or references are required; applicants who meet the GPA threshold are invited to complete a supplemental application through Kira Talent, and roughly 120 of 1,200+ applicants are then invited to interview.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Application deadline 15 January 2027 for domestic and international applicants; supplementary application released 20 February and due by noon ET on 26 February 2027.
