The Master of Science in Psychotherapy at McMaster University is a course-based graduate program focused on mental health and evidence-based psychotherapy, with a specific emphasis on cognitive behavioural therapy. The curriculum consists of nine classroom-based courses and two clinical practicum courses, using a mix of didactic lectures, small-group tutorials, self-directed activities, class presentations, and hands-on clinical learning experiences. The program is completed full-time over 20 months, spanning five academic terms, combining theoretical study with supervised clinical practice. Students typically begin their studies in September, with an application deadline of November 14. Graduates gain practical clinical training and theoretical grounding needed to practise evidence-based psychotherapy, preparing them for clinical roles in mental health care settings. The program is offered through McMaster's School of Graduate Studies.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need an Honours Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Sciences or Health Sciences from a recognized university with at least a B+ average (equivalent to a McMaster GPA of 8.5 out of 12) in the final-year courses of the related discipline, consistent with the School of Graduate Studies' general requirement. Applicants must also have successfully completed at least one second-year or higher undergraduate course in human abnormal psychology, clinical psychology, or psychopathology. Required documents include a curriculum vitae, a personal statement addressing the program's admission checklist, two letters of reference (at least one academic), and official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who did not complete their undergraduate degree at an English-speaking university, must provide a TOEFL iBT score of at least 92 (minimum 22 reading, 24 speaking, 24 listening, 22 writing) or an IELTS score of at least 7.0. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed; meeting the minimums does not guarantee admission, since space is limited.
