Overview

The Political Science PhD at McMaster University is a thesis-based doctoral program in the Faculty of Social Sciences, offered through the Department of Political Science in the fields of comparative public policy and international relations. The department's broader research areas include Canadian politics, comparative politics, comparative public policy, international relations and political theory, and the department more generally examines power and politics at the national level, including Canadian and comparative politics, political theory, and public policy and administration. The degree is completed through supervised original research culminating in a doctoral dissertation. The program is offered on a full-time or part-time basis and is structured to be completed in four years, with a typical intake each September. It follows on from the department's one-year, course-based MA program, which introduces students to graduate-level study across a major and minor field before some proceed to doctoral research.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the PhD program normally requires a completed M.A. degree with an average of at least an A-minus from a recognized university. Applicants must complete the online McMaster graduate application, arrange for three academic references to be submitted directly to the Department of Political Science, and provide one original transcript from every university attended. A one-page, single-spaced statement of research interests and reasons for choosing McMaster's PhD program in Political Science is required, along with a resume or CV. Applicants whose primary language is not English must provide evidence of proficiency, per the School of Graduate Studies' general requirement of an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall or a TOEFL iBT score of at least 92. Application deadlines are set by the Department of Political Science and posted on its website. Admission is competitive: meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a place, and final decisions rest with the Faculty of Social Sciences' Graduate Admissions and Studies Committee.
