McMaster University's Master of Arts in Political Science is a one-year, course-based graduate program examining power and politics at the national level, including Canadian and comparative politics, political theory, and public policy and administration. Students select one major and one minor field from areas that include Canadian politics, comparative politics, political theory, and public policy, building a program of study tailored to their research interests. Coursework develops advanced skills in political analysis, theory, and research methods applicable to careers in government, public policy, research, and further graduate study. It provides a foundation for students planning to pursue a PhD in political science or a related discipline, as well as for those entering policy-focused careers directly after graduation. Students typically begin the program in September, with an application deadline of January 31.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a clear B+ average or better in an Honours Political Science bachelor's degree, a four-year major in political science, or a similar background; meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee admission, as the program is competitive. The one-year, full-time program (September-August) can also be completed part-time over two to three years from initial registration. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an English-proficiency score completed within two years of the application deadline: a minimum TOEFL score of 92 (iBT), 237 (computer-based), or 580 (paper-based), or a minimum IELTS Academic score of 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each section.
