Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science is offered through the University of Toronto's Department of Political Science and the School of Graduate Studies. Students complete coursework in two declared fields chosen from Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics, Development Studies, International Relations, Political Theory, and Public Policy, totalling 3.0 to 5.0 full-course equivalents, including a required methods component unless Political Theory is the primary field. Candidates complete written field examinations in both fields by the end of Year 2, then form a thesis committee of three faculty members, including a supervisor, and submit a thesis proposal of approximately 25 pages by December of Year 3. The program culminates in an original doctoral thesis and oral defence. A combined JD/PhD option is available for students pursuing a Juris Doctor in Law alongside the PhD. The program is delivered in person and normally takes four years of full-time study, with a maximum time limit of six years.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed an MA degree in political science or its equivalent, with grades averaging A- or better. The program does not require or recommend standardized admission test scores.
