Diploma in Social Work

This diploma program at Medicine Hat College combines knowledge of the humanities and behavioural sciences with social work theory and philosophy, developing practical skills through classroom instruction and fieldwork. The two-year, six-semester program covers introductory social work practice and theory, work with individuals, groups, families, and communities, mental health, trauma, and addictions, evidence-based practice and research methods, and Indigenous issues and ways of knowing. In the second year, students complete two practicum placements that bring classroom knowledge together with applied skills, and may optionally take part in an international practicum. The program is delivered on the Medicine Hat campus and places emphasis on anti-oppressive practice, diversity, and social justice within a broad and inclusive perspective on social work. It suits high school graduates, mature students, and transfer students preparing for careers supporting individuals and communities as social workers.
