The Welder Apprenticeship at Medicine Hat College trains students to join and cut metals in beams, girders, vessels, piping, and other components used in construction and manufacturing. Welders work across a range of settings, including outdoor construction sites and indoor production and repair shops. The program follows Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training model, combining on-the-job work experience with technical training delivered at the college. Medicine Hat College offers all three years of technical training, completed over three to four years alongside employment as a registered apprentice. Admission begins with securing a job in the welding trade; applicants then register as an apprentice and complete an Apprenticeship Application and Contract through Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training before attending technical training at the college. Class schedules for each technical training period are posted through tradesecrets.alberta.ca about two months before classes begin. Graduates who complete all requirements receive an Alberta Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate and Journeyperson certification, with an additional interprovincial exam available for Red Seal endorsement.
