Program details

Overview

This course-based Master of Applied Science in Energy Systems Engineering, delivered by Memorial University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science on the St. John's campus, admits students in the fall term and is structured around two technical streams. The Energy Conversion stream is aimed at students from mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering backgrounds and emphasizes energy generation and utilization, while the Power Systems stream is aimed at electrical engineering graduates and focuses on the electrical side of energy systems. Core coursework common to the program includes energy economics and policy, and fundamentals of energy systems, with stream-specific courses such as advanced thermodynamics or advanced power systems, plus electives covering thermal power plants, solar engineering, and renewable energy systems. The program concludes with a project completed in the final semesters rather than a full research thesis. It suits engineering graduates who want applied, stream-specific training addressing both the technical and economic dimensions of energy systems, whether their background lies in mechanical, electrical, chemical, or industrial engineering.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a second-class degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical, or industrial engineering, or a related discipline, from a university of recognized standing. Intake: Fall, each year.

Application Details

Start Date: Fall, each year
Application Deadline: Memorial University's undergraduate application system opens one year ahead of each semester for the 2027 cycle: for Fall 2027 entry the portal opens 10 September 2026, the priority deadline (also the early-entrance-scholarship deadline) is 1 March 2027, the document deadline is 20 August 2027, and applications finally close 9 September 2027; Winter 2027 entry has a priority deadline of 1 October 2026 and closes 6 January 2027; Spring 2027 entry closes 11 May 2027 with a priority date of 1 February 2027. International applicants use the same direct application to Memorial and are only advised to apply at least 12 weeks before their intended semester starts; no fixed international closing date is published.
