Overview
The Master of Arts in Sociology at the University of Toronto helps students develop theoretical perspectives together with qualitative and quantitative research skills, providing a foundation in sociological training for those who plan to pursue a doctoral degree, while also preparing graduates for research-oriented careers in the public and private sectors. The program is completed full-time over three sessions spanning a single Fall-Winter-Summer registration cycle and is delivered in person. Students choose between a coursework option, completing 4.0 full-course equivalents including four core courses, with up to 0.5 full-course equivalent from a reading course and up to 0.5 full-course equivalent from an elective outside the department, or a research-paper option, completing 3.5 full-course equivalents plus a tracked research paper. Students must maintain a B average to be recommended for the degree. Admission requires an overall B+ average in each of the last two years of post-secondary education, and no standardized admissions tests are required. The department also offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology.
